About Lynne

Lynne is one of the "Girls" benchmark workouts and one of the few with no clock. You do five max-rep sets of bench press at bodyweight and five max-rep sets of pull-ups, resting as long as you like, and add up every rep.

Because rest is unlimited, Lynne is a pure test of upper-body strength endurance: pressing and pulling, one muscle group at a time, with nothing to hide behind.

Tips for Lynne

  • Use a spotter or safety arms on every bench set. Going to failure under a bodyweight bar alone is dangerous.
  • Rest long enough to recover, usually 2 to 3 minutes between sets. There's no prize for speed.
  • Agree on the pull-up standard before you start, such as strict or kipping and chin over the bar, and keep it the same each time you test.
  • Your first set is usually your biggest. Hold back a rep or two on the bench in round one so later sets don't crash.

Lynne questions

What is the Lynne workout?

Lynne is 5 rounds of max-rep bench press at bodyweight followed by max-rep pull-ups. There is no time limit and you rest as needed. Your score is the total number of reps from all 10 sets.

How is Lynne scored?

Add up every bench press and every pull-up from all five rounds. On FitClash, enter that total as your score.

What is a good Lynne score?

Around 100 total reps at Rx is a strong score and 150 or more is elite. Most people new to it land under 60, often with a lighter bench load.

How do I scale Lynne?

Bench a lighter load, such as 0.75 or 0.5 times bodyweight, and use banded or jumping pull-ups or ring rows. Push-ups can replace the bench press if you have no rack or spotter.
